After Hooper defeated Daniel Teymur at UFC 245, Ben Askren referred to his lookalike as his “son.” Chase joined in, calling Funky by his father’s name.
According to “The Dream,” Askren’s antics were amusing. And that was a major factor in why he went along with it. The relationship between Askren and his son reached its zenith when Askren wasn’t even there.
Chase served as a correspondent for UFC Fight Pass at UFC 246. He went to speak with Jorge Masvidal, the boxer who defeated Ben Askren in barely five seconds. Chase approached him and questioned why he had hurt his father in that way.
At UFC 246, Askren was there as well, circling Maycee Barber. There were plans for a face-to-face conversation between Chase and Askren. Barber’s loss did cause an ACL tear, though. That maintained the separation between the newest father-son team in MMA.
Chase Hooper UFC Career Highlight
On December 14, 2019, at UFC 245, Chase faced Daniel Teymur in his professional MMA debut. On June 6, 2020, at UFC 250, he then squared off against Alex Caceres. Hooper suffered his first defeat as a professional when he was defeated by a unanimous decision. He competed against Peter Barrett at UFC 256 on December 12, 2020.
He made a comeback and submitted with a heel hook in the third round to win the fight. He competed against Steven Peterson at UFC 263 on June 12, 2021. During the weigh-ins, Peterson’s weight was 148.5 pounds, an increase of 2.5 pounds.
As a result of Peterson being fined 20% of his winnings, which went to Hooper, the fight was conducted at catchweight. He was defeated by a unanimous decision. Felipe Colares and Chase will square off on May 21, 2022, at UFC Fight Night 206.
At Dana White’s 14th Contender Series, Hooper faced up against Canaan Kawaihae. By unanimous vote, he prevailed in the match and received a development league contract.
Before getting recruited by the UFC, he participated in three more fights, winning two of them and having the third one result in a draw in renowned lesser promotions like CFFC and Titan FC.
