Chris Dawson is a former pro rugby football player. But he has come a long way from those glorious days to being convicted of slaying his wife.
On August 30, Dawson, a retired teacher in Sydney, was sentenced guilty of killing his first wife, who strangely went missing more than 40 years ago in 1982.
Dawson was detained and formally charged with murder in December 2018 after several years of delayed and unsuccessful investigations. The NSW Supreme Court’s hearing for his case began on May 9, 2022.
He has three children out of two marriages. The first one was with the murder victim Lynette Dawson in 1970, and after she went missing, Dawson married one of his former students, Joanne Curtis, in 1984, only to get divorced in ’93.

Chris Dawson and her first wife, Lynette Dawson, gave life to two children, Sherryn Dawson and Shanelle Dawson.
When their mother Lynette vanished from Sydney’s northern beaches in 1982, eldest daughter Shanelle was just four years old. And that was the last time two of them ever heard of her.
Dawson, their father, was first not thought to be a suspect in his wife’s abduction but has now emerged as the person who kidnapped and killed Lynette. Shanelle, who was four when the incident happened, is now 44 and is a mother herself.
Similarly, Sherryn Dawson, the couple’s second daughter, came after Shanelle in 1980, and she is currently 42 years old. However, no further details of their present whereabouts can be traced. Sherryn does not want to make headlines in the media as she is occupied with her life and family.
On the other hand, Dawson’s third child, Kristen Dawson, born in 1985, is the by-product of his second marriage with his former student Joanne Curtis. Chris and Joanne wed in 1984, and a year later, they are blessed with Kristen.
Kristen, who is now in her 30s and has two small children, continues to reside on Sydney’s northern beaches, close to her mother and not far from the former residence of Chris and Lyn Dawson.

None of their children, Sherryn, Kristen, and Shanelle, were ready to believe their father, Chris Dawson, would kill their mother, Lynette.
And unsurprisingly, the 74-year-old man spurned any involvement in his wife’s disappearance. In January 1982, Lynette Dawson vanished from the city’s northern beaches, and she was never found afterward.
Attorneys representing Dawson suggested a different theory for the disappearance, speculating that Dawson could have abandoned her family when her faith was betrayed.
However, the crown claimed that during a judge-only trial in the NSW Supreme Court, he killed Lynette to have an unclogged relationship with their teenage babysitter and former student Joanne Curtis, whom he married in 1984.
Chris was nabbed in Queensland in December 2018 and deported to New South Wales. He was jailed until the murder of his wife was tried in February 2020. His sexual involvement with Curtis, while still a teacher at Cromer High School, is also accused of having intimate relations with a minor.

Born in 1948, the 33-year-old Lynette Joy Dawson vanished into thin air on January 9, 1982. She was survived by her two daughters and her husband, Chris Dawson.
Though her whereabouts and body are still unknown, coroner’s police investigations have concluded that she was killed.
The year was 1970. A high school couple, Chris and Lynette, married at St Jude’s Church, Randwick in Sydney. They just hit 21. They gave birth to two children.
On January 8, 1982, Lynette went to her mother’s house at Northbridge Baths, but she never found a way and vanished. And that was the last time anybody saw or heard her.
