The all-rounder of the New Zealand cricket team, Daryl Mitchell, had shown a bit of interest in rugby during school days. In a sport where his father is considered to be an elite-level coach, many thought Daryl would one day be coached by him.

John Mitchell, the father of Daryl Mitchell, is a former rugby player and the current defense coach of the Japan national team. In his 25 years in coaching, Mitchell has won several accolades, including Bledisloe Cup and Tri Nations series twice.
John and Kay separated when Daryl and Ciara were quite young. But the two were able to co-parent easily, and Daryl is as close to his father as he is to his mother.
Last year when Daryl played the match-winning knock of 72 against England, John was there in the stands rooting for his son. And it was reported that John quit his job to watch his son play on a “day off.”
