Cinnamon Brown, then 14 years old, was found guilty of squeezing the trigger on the gun that killed Linda Brown, David Brown’s sixth wife and stepmother, while she slept in March 1985.

Dave Brown received all the money from a life insurance policy on his deceased wife and married Linda Brown’s younger sister, Patti Bailey, while his daughter waited silently in a California Youth Authority facility for over four years.

Cinnamon Brown, Bailey’s stepmother, informed investigators that her father was behind the murder plot and that he had woken her up and urged her to kill her stepmother. Bailey was later detained at the Youth Authority.

What happened to David Brown?

According to prosecutors, David Brown allegedly forced his daughter, Cinnamon, to bear the blame for his wife’s murder.

A judge sentenced Dave Brown to life in prison without the possibility of parole in 1990, describing him as a “master manipulator” on par with Charles Manson for plotting his wife’s murder.

A Killing in the Family and If You Really Loved Me were based on the case, as were the NBC miniseries Love You to Death and the Lifetime miniseries Love, Lies, and Murder.

According to prison spokesperson Anthony Bear, Brown had been detained at the state prison in Sacramento before coming to Corcoran in July 2001. Bear said that Brown had been sick and wheelchair-bound in recent years.

Bear told City that he was “silent,” stayed to himself much of the time, and was put in protective custody because of his popularity.
