Keino is a retired Kenyan athlete and a two-time Olympic gold medallist in track and field. He was one of the nation’s first in a long series of successful middle and long-distance runners.

He encouraged and helped many of his fellow citizens to develop into athletic powerhouses. Kipchoge joined the International Olympic Committee(IOC) as an honorary member in 2000.

Since Kipchoge Keino and Eliud Kipchoge are both from Kenya, many believe they are related. However, they are not connected. Furthermore, it has been said that Eliud Kipchoge is Kipchoge Keino’s son, but, Eluid lost his father when he was young.

A retired Kenyan track and field athlete Kipchoge Keino was born on January 17, 1940, in Kipsamo, Nandi District, Kenya. He started his international career at the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth, Western Australia, when he finished twelfth in the three miles.

At the first All-Africa Games, he took home two gold medals each for the 1500 and 5000 meters. He won the three-mile run and the mile race at the 1966 Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica.

Keino finished third in the 5000 meters and first in the 1500 meters at the following Commonwealth Games. In 1973, he announced his retirement.

Eliud Kipchoge was born to his mother Janet Rotich in Kapsisiywa, Nandi County, Kenya. Eliud had no memories of his father because he passed away when he was young, and the only thing he knew about his father is from his pictures.

His mother was a teacher and he is the youngest of four children. Jane Rotich briefly bowed her head, maybe praying for him as her son began a race that was supposed to change the course of the marathon history.

She lost it and sobbed when her son crossed the finish line. She felt happy and proud that Kipchoge kept his promise to inspire millions worldwide with his outlook that “no human is limited.”

Kipchoge graduated from Kaptel Secondary School in 1999. In 2001, when he was 16 years old, he first met his trainer Patrick Sang, a former steeplechase Olympic medalist.

Eliud ran a time of 12:52.61 to set a new world junior record in the 5000 m at the 2003 Bislett Games. He took part in the 2004 Roma Golden League Meeting.

He finished first among the starters in the 5000-meter race in 12:46.53, the sixth-fastest time ever.

Eliud Kipchoge’s Career

When Eliud Kipchoge was 16 years, he first met Patrik Sang, a former Olympic medallist in the steeplechase, and this was the beginning of his professional running training.

Kipchoge was a member of the Kenyan junior team that took home the gold in the junior event at the 2002 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Dublin. He has been in the top four of the 5000 m World Championship five times.

Before concentrating on marathons, he used to compete in 5000-meter races. He established a world junior record in the 5000-meter race at the 2003 Bislett Games in 12:52.61.

He won the senior 5000 m title at the age of 18. In the 2003 IAAF World Cross Country game, he earned his first individual world championship title. During the same competition, he established the 5000-meter track world junior record.

Kipchoge earned a bronze medal for Kenya at the 2004 Olympics and silver medals at the World Championships in 2007, the Summer Olympics in 2008, and the Commonwealth Games in 2010. He competed in the 2006 IAAF World Indoor Championships.

Eliud Kipchoge set a new world record by winning the Berlin marathon in a time of 2:01:09 on September 25, 2022. In the nation’s capital race, the Kenyan runner has now officially broken the men’s record twice.

His previous best time for a 42.2 km official race was 2:01:39, which he achieved on the same course in 2018. After starting at a record 59:51 for the first 13.1 miles, Kipchoge slowed down in the last kilometers, finishing in 61:18.
