Joe Sakic and Wife Debbie Metivier Share Three Children

Joe Sakic wife Debbie Metivier was a sophomore student in Swift Current when they met.

Debbie was fifteen years old and Joe was seventeen when the two went on their first date. He was a quiet, awkward teenager when he dredged up enough courage and confidence to tap on the back of Metivier to introduce himself.

“Hi, I’m Joe.”

She was standing by her locker talking to her friends when Joe approached. Debbie had no clue he was a hockey star which he found refreshing.

Sakic was a senior in high school and a hockey player for a local team, Swift Current Broncos. The age gap of two years never became a problem.

Although Debbie was not interested in hanging out with a boy two years older than her, his persistence chipped away at her initial uncertainty. Their initial dates consisted of driving up to the movie hall and watching the latest releases.

The first date was one of many before Joe got down on his knees and proposed to his girlfriend of many years, Debbie Metivier.

They had only been dating for two years when she followed him to Quebec. His NHL career started with Quebec Nordiques in 1988.

After seven years of dating, they tied the knot in 1993. Soon after, she changed her maiden name and became known as Debbie Sakic.

They have been a Denver resident since 1995 and welcomed three kids, two sons and one daughter, in the state of Colorado.

Who Is Debbie Metivier?

Debbie Metivier is a philanthropist and is active in multiple charities and food banks.

In 1998, three years after moving to Denver, Debbie and her husband started volunteering with the Food Bank of the Rockies. It has been 24 years since they got involved in enabling kids across Colorado to know where their next meal is coming from.

They came up with two annual fundraising events to be a voice for low-income children of Colorado.

Their first event, Joe Sakic Celebrity Golf Tournament, takes place every year at the Sanctuary Golf Course. Celebrities, sponsors, and guests mill around for a good cause every August.

The high school sweethearts had held the tournament eleven times before Joe retired as a hockey player. 

Their second event, Joe & Debbie Sakic Bringing Hope to the Table Celebration, is an elegant celebration. The night starts with a cocktail reception, followed by dinner. The Sakics will hold the high-end auction and the proceedings will go to the food bank.

It was held at the Hilton Denver City Center on August 16, 2019, and at the Marriott Denver Tech Center on August 26, 2009. 

Joe Sakic three children with his partner Debbie Sakic are all former hockey players.

His three kids, Mitchell Sakic, Chase Sakic, and Kamryn Sakic, share his passion and love for the game.

Debbie gave birth to their first child, Mitchell Sakic, in 1996. He was born three years after they spoke their vows in Denver.

Mitchell was followed by the birth of their fraternal twins, daughter Kamryn and son Chase, in 2000.

A week after Joe was announced the winner of the Lester B Pearson Award in 2001, he went to Disney World to celebrate with his family of five.

Joe focused on coaching the two boys and their youth hockey leagues after retirement in 2009.

First Son Mitchell Sakic

Mitchell Sakic is the oldest son of Joe Sakic and Debbie Sakic at age 26.

After a wailing Mitchell joined their growing family in the winter of 1996, Joe joked that he wanted his son to avoid hockey and become a pitcher.

However, he followed after his father and played hockey at Mullen high school from 2011 to 2013. Mitchell joined Colorado Avalanche in 2020 as Assistant Video Scout.

He was thirteen years old when his father retired from playing hockey. Mitchell is engaged to Breanna Devlin.

Second Son Chase Sakic

Chase Sakic is a retired hockey player of Colorado Thunderbirds and Pursuit of Excellence 18U.

He was born with his fraternal twin sister, Kamryn, on Oct 14, 2000, in Englewood, Colorado. The two are 22 years old.

When he was eight, his dad, Joe, would coach him and his under-8 Littleton Hawks youth hockey team.

Chase has a height of 5’9” and weighs 159 lbs. He was with the Colorado Thunderbirds from 2012 till 2015. The youngest Sakic male joined Pursuit of Excellence 16U AAA in 2015 and was on the team Pursuit of Excellence 18U AAA “A” when he left in 2018.

Daughter Kamryn Sakic

Joe Sakic daughter Kamryn Sakic was part of the Cherry Creek varsity field hockey team in high school

Kamryn graduated in 2019 and held the position of defenceman in the rink. She helped her team win against Fort Collins in October 2018 by a 6-0. Nine days later, they won again against Grandview by a 5-0.

The 22-year-old was born alongside her brother, Chase Sakic, in Englewood, Colorado, in 2000. She is younger than her oldest sibling, Michael, by four years.
