After working for other companies for ten years, he founded the Utendahl group. His investment group grew in size and value over time, resulting in a significant increase in his wealth.
After many years of successful management, John decided to sell the investment group to the Williams Capital Group. However, he did not sell his entire stake in the company, as he remains a minority shareholder in Utendahl Capital Management, a subsidiary of the larger Utendahl group.
As Vice Chairman of Deutsche Bank Americas, Utendahl joined the company on March 25, 2010. Utendahl left Deutsche Bank in 2016 to become Executive Vice Chairman of Bank of America after five years there.
