She is the author of the soon-to-be-released book AMERICAN OLIGARCHS. Bernstein was one of 12 journalists in the United States to be awarded a prestigious year-long Knight Fellowship at Stanford University in 2007.

She has received more than 50 honors for her work. For eight years, she worked as a political journalist for the New York Observer.

She has taught journalism at City College, served as the Jack Newfield Professor of Investigative Journalism at Hunter College, and led journalist training in a variety of settings.
