Kurt Knickmeier has been incarcerated for the past 36 years. He has now asked for assisted suicide and filed a complaint with the Federal Constitutional Court.

Knickmeier began his criminal career when he was 18 years old.

Who Is Kurt Knickmeier?

He caught attention after he demanded medical assistance to commit suicide or the chance of freedom in the future.

In 2020, the German constitutional court ruled that the universal right of individuality included in the German constitution includes the freedom to choose one’s own death.

This right includes the freedom to commit suicide and to seek the voluntary assistance of others. Knickmeier has spent 36 years in prison.

Knickmeier now asserts this right to acquire drugs in order to commit suicide if he has no hope of escaping in the near future.

When he approached the institution’s management for this drug, they refused, and Andreas Schüller, the institution’s director, stated, “We are there to offer individuals a viewpoint, not to actively contribute to their death.”

Why Does Kurt Knickmeier Want To Commit Suicide?

Kurt Knickmeier wants a chance to end his prison sentence.

Knickmeier revealed what he knows: “He will not be released before 2026. He understands. But he believes he must have a chance to escape.” That is why he requested “opening measures.”

That was not granted to him. He claims that his personality condition was mentioned in the justification.

Due to formal irregularities, the Federal Constitutional Court has now remanded the case to the Regional Court. It is a one-of-a-kind instance in the history of the Federal Republic.

Why Was Kurt Knickmeier Arrested?

Knickmeier began his criminal career at the age of 18 when he was convicted of burglary for the first time.

The first 33 months were spent in juvenile prison, followed by 14 months in prison. He and his accomplice murdered three persons during a heist at a riding stable in East Westphalia on August 26, 1985.

Knickmeier fled to Spain, was apprehended, and was eventually deported to Germany after nearly a year. In 1987, he was sentenced to life in prison.

He has spent 36 years in prison now.
