Former CIA officer Matt Castelli served in the Obama and Trump White Houses as the National Security Council’s Director for Counterterrorism.

In a statement welcoming Castelli to the race, Stefanik, the third-ranking House Republican, referred to him as a “radical far-left Democrat” and touted his advantage in fundraising.

Sen. Alessandra Biaggi of New York State lost to Hudson Valley Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney in the Democratic primary for the 17th House District seat on Tuesday. Around 10 p.m., The Associated Press declared Maloney the winner.

He has served as the 18th District’s representative since 2013. Mike Lawler, a Republican from Rockland County, is his opponent in the November election.

Maloney became a target of the progressive left and Biaggi when he opted to run in the new 17th district, unseating Democratic Rep. Mondaire Jones, who chose to run in New York City instead, with Republicans seeking to flip the seat.
