Maurice Edu and his parents Maurice Edu Sr and Molly Edu have African roots. Maurice was raised in California by his parents.

Edu’s father, Maurice Edu Sr, was a mathematics teacher and a soccer player. Maurice is a Nigerian from Akwa Ibom State. He was raised by his beloved parents in Fontana, California, along with his four siblings.

The retired athlete inherited his father’s love for sports, and the elder Edu trained his sons (Maurice and his younger brother) to play soccer from a young age. Under his dad’s guidance, he became a top target for college recruiters across the U.S. during his final year of high school.

However, his world shattered when Maurice Sr. had a stroke which left him unable to walk or talk. Furthermore, the late mathematics teacher couldn’t coach his child anymore, and after struggling with his health for 14 years, he went to God’s side. 

Maurice Edu Parents Are Nigerian Immigrants

Maurice Edu was born to his parents Maurice Edu Sr and Molly Edu in 1986 in Fontana. Maurice and his four siblings came to love California.

His mom and dad were Nigerian immigrants who settled in the United States to have better opportunities and live better lives. Maurice and Molly became schoolteachers; they started their careers as mathematics and chemistry teachers, respectively.

His father was a soccer coach for youths and taught them the sport.

Although they adopted the American lifestyle, the elder Edus never forgot their African roots and passed down the culture to their children. They raised their kids with unconditional love, care, and support and guided them on the right path. 

Maurice Edu Father Passed Him The Love For Soccer

Maurice Edu learned soccer from his father Maurice Edu Sr. Maurice Sr was a mathematics teacher.

Maurice’s father coached youth soccer in Los Angeles. He grew up a soccer fanatic in Nigeria and passed down his love for the sport to his son. 

The former athlete’s dad, his namesake, had always loved playing football, although he didn’t pursue it professionally like his son. Maurice Sr. taught his kids to play the sport he had fancied since they were young.

The elder Edu was his primary coach, cheerleader, and role model, and he taught the younger Edu many skills in youth leagues. However, the former professional soccer player went from a funny, friendly teen to a sullen, introspective loner when his beloved father had a stroke that left him unable to talk or walk.

The athlete had a tough time thinking over what to do with his life and future, but he never gave up on his dad’s dream to see him play in the major league. He followed his passion and met his parent’s expectorations, but he went through a heartbreak in November 2017 when his best friend and mentor passed away.

Lil Mo paid a heartfelt tribute to Big Mo through his social media and shared how he will continue to do anything/everything in his power to make the angel watching over him from heaven proud. He also wrote that the person he is today reflects his late father, and Maurice Sr.’s spirit lives forever in him and his family. 

Maurice Edu Mother Molly Is The Backbone Of The Family

Maurice Edu learned chemistry from his mother Molly Edu. Molly is a schoolteacher who teaches chemistry to youths.

Per Obong, Maurice’s mom is the immediate past President of the Akwa Ibom State Association, Los Angeles Chapter. They met at the Akwa Ibom National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. Moreover, Molly is the mother of five, and the former athlete has four siblings, a younger brother, Reggie Edu, and three older sisters.

Reggie also grew up playing soccer and serves as a teacher, coach, and director of coaching for Newcastle United FC, the southern Californian youth soccer club. Moreover, he has blessed his mom with two adorable grandchildren, three-year-old Bryson & five-month-old Rome Carter Edu.

The former soccer player has always remained grateful to have the best mother who helps him overcome his bad days and celebrate the good ones. While he was often homesick in his first year at the Maryland Terrapins, momma Edu counseled him with simple, sound advice.
