Chagaev defeated Valuev by a majority vote in the title defense, which took place on April 14, 2007. Alexander Zimin, who trained the last Soviet Union amateur boxing squad, replaced Manuel Gabrielian as Valuev’s trainer.

Then, on December 20, 2008, Valuev faced up against the 46-year-old, four-time world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield in the first title defense of his second reign as the WBA Champion. Valuev weighed 310.8 pounds (141 kg) before the fight, about 100 pounds more than Holyfield, who weighed 214.3 pounds (97 kg).

Valuev prevailed in a hotly contested majority decision following a somewhat uninteresting fight that included no knockdowns and few punches from either combatant. The WBA declared preparations to consider the choice in response to the contentious outcome.

At the Arena Nurnberger Versicherung in Nuremberg on November 7, 2009, Valuev fought former unified and lineal cruiserweight champion David Haye (22-1, 21 KOs) in what was dubbed “David versus, Goliath,” his second defense. Valuev was defeated in a majority vote.
