The Beginning 

Wiese was an Under-16 Grant Khomo Week team member in 2011 for the Queenstown-based competition. He first became a rugby player while attending and competing for Horskool Upington. As a result, Griquas Country Districts received provincial call-ups in 2011, 2012, and 2013.

He started all three of their games, scoring two tries in their 36-15 victory over Border Country Districts in their second game and one against Namibia in their third game. The following year, Wiese was a member of the Griquas Country Districts team that participated in the Under-18 Craven Week, South Africa’s top high school rugby union competition, held in Port Elizabeth.

After graduating from high school, Wiese relocated to Bloemfontein, where he joined the Free State Cheetahs’ program and the CUT Ixias university squad. Beginning in 2016, Wiese participated in seven games for CUT Ixias in the Varsity Cup for the first time. He scored tries in games against UP Tuks and NMMU Madibaz, helping his team finish in sixth place. Later, Wiese joined the Free State XV team for their Currie Cup qualification campaign following the Varsity Cup.

England’s Premiership Rugby Debut

2020 was a huge turning point in his career. Wiese’s move to England to play for Leicester Tigers in Premiership Rugby beginning in the 2020–21 season was confirmed on July 23, 2020.

Wiese was selected for the Springboks team on June 5, 2021, in preparation for their test series against the British and Irish Lions. On July 2, 2021, against Georgia, he made his South African debut as a substitute.
