Who Is Rex Sunahara? Long Snapper Released By Steelers After Playing Second NFL Season

Rex Sunahara, a free agent long snapper signed with Pittsburgh Steelers, has not been featured on Wikipedia as of yet. 

Sunahara didn’t think he’d play football again at West Virginia after he transferred from The University of Rhode Island to be with his father, but he tried out and was accepted into the team.

Rex redshirted his first year and didn’t play much in 2017, before taking over as the team’s snapper in 2018 and 2019.

He was a semifinalist for the Patrick Mannelly Award. Notre Dame’s John Shannon was recognized as the NCAA’s best snapper.

After the Patrick Mannelly Award, Rex took part in the Hula Bowl and the NFLPA Bowl.

Who Is Rex Sunahara? 

Rex Sunahara is a 25-year-old free agent long snapper who was born on October 9, 1996. The 6’6″ Ohio native, who weighs 242 pounds, was a West Virginia University athlete.

Rex was born in the Ohio town of Bay Village and played long snapper for the University of Rhode Island in eight games as a freshman.

At New Hampshire, he made one special team tackle. Sunahara also had two special teams tackles against Richmond and one special team tackle against Maine.

He made his collegiate debut as a long snapper in the season opener against Syracuse (9/4). Walter Rekstis, his great-grandfather, was a three-time letter winner at Syracuse from 1935 to 1937.

Wikipedia And Biography Details Of NFL Long Snapper Rex Sunahara Released By Pittsburgh Steelers

Rex Sunahara, a free agent long snapper who had recently signed a contract for the 2022 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, is not listed on Wikipedia. 

Rex grew up playing wide receiver in Bay Village, Ohio, and started learning to snap in 2015 at Rhode Island. He followed his father in West Virginia 2016, who was the volleyball coach at the time.

In 2020, Rex went undrafted but eventually signed with the Miami Dolphins and trained with the team for nearly two seasons. His name appeared on and off the transactions sheet over the course of two weeks.

He spent almost the entire regular season on the tryout circuit before being signed to the practice squad by the Pittsburgh Steelers on December 8th. He was cut two days later and didn’t return until the end of the season, when he signed a future contract on January 18th.

Rex Sunahara Contract And Salary With Pittsburgh Steelers

Rex Sunahara signed a one-year practice contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021, with a salary of $165,600. The Steelers offered him a one-year SFA contract in 2022, but it has been canceled since then.

Sunahara had agreed to sign a $705,000 contract with the Steelers at the time. 

Before Rex came over to Steelers, he had signed four contracts with the Dolphins: UDFA, Practice, SFA, and SFA. His contract with dolphins came with a salary of $2,285,000, $142,800, $1,485,000, and $660,000 over a course of two years.

However, three of the contract with the Dolphins were terminated. According to OverTheCap, his total career earnings is $68,000.
