Alastair Clarkson AFL Career As A Player: Was He Successful?

Alastair Clarkson's AFL career as a player was nothing compared to his coaching career. He was a great football player, nonetheless.

The North Melbourne Football Club selected Clarkson. He made his Victorian Football League debut in round 15 of the 1987 season against Melbourne. It didn't take long for the crowd to recognize him as he kicked the winning goal after the siren.

Also, people remember Clarkson from the game against Carlton. The highly intended "Battle of Britain" saw many players being sent off, and he was one of them. The forward punched Ian Aitken from behind and received a four-match ban. Aitken's jaw was broken.

Primarily playing as a half-forward and sometimes as a midfielder, Clarkson scored 61 goals in 93 games for North Melbourne. He then joined Melbourne after seven years with the North.

The forward's record was equally good with Melbourne as he bagged 24 goals in 41 appearances. He retired from AFL in 1997 and started his coaching stints.

Alastair Clarkson Is One Of The Greatest AFL Coaches

Alastair Clarkson's coaching career is laced with gold as he is one of the most successful coaches in the league.

After several stints as an assistant coach, Clarkson landed the senior head coach job at Hawthorn Football Club in 2005. The Hawks were in a rebuilding phase as their team was nowhere near competing for the premiership.

Within just three years, Clarkson built a team everyone feared. He took the team to the finals in 2007. But they were eliminated in the semi-final that year.

But the progress continued. The 2008 season was something Clarkson will never forget in his entire life. The Hawks dominated the whole season until they went to win the premiership title after 17 years.

From 2012 to 2015, he led his team to four consecutive finals, which has never been done before. He also became one of the six coaches to win three successive premiership titles in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
