Taylor and her sister, Symone, know about tennis at an early age from her mother. Her mother was a tennis player and used to play at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo. Her friend Donald Young Sr. was a coach, and she asked him to coach her daughter. Donald accepted her request and started to train the two sisters together.

Taylor Townsend, a younger sister of Symone, started playing tennis at age six and became the first player who participated in XS Tennis.
Her mother, Sheila, introduced Tennis to both sisters at an early age. She sent her daughters to coach Donald Young, as Donald Young and Sheila grew up in the south side of Chicago and went to the same tennis class together.
Due to less improvement with Donald, Sheila decided to send Taylor to the U.S.T.A. Training Center. Sheila said they knew they could provide the finances Taylor needed to get the opportunities, experience, and training.
She made her debut at the Open in August 2010, but she lost in the first round of the girls' singles qualifying tournaments. After the year, she got a wild-card entry from U.S.T.A for the women's qualifying tournament and successfully won a match against Arantxa Parra Santonja of Spain and became the second youngest player to qualify.

She became the no.1 player in the ITF junior ranking after winning the title of Easter Bowl.
