McFarlane saw combat twice during the Vietnam War. He led an artillery battery during the initial arrival of US combat forces in Vietnam in March 1965. While on his first tour, McFarlane was chosen as an Olmsted Scholar for graduate study.
McFarlane served in the Marine Corps, where he led platoons and a battery of field artillery howitzers and was also the Operations Officer for an artillery battalion.
He was a gunnery instructor at the Army Advanced Artillery Course. From 1968 until 1971, he worked as the executive assistant to the Marine Corps' Operations Deputy, preparing him for meetings with the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
