Campbell has submitted his abdication to President David Barham following 14 years with the Essendon Football Club, nearly nine of which were spent as CEO. What is the reason behind his resignation?

Xavier Campbell has served as CEO since 2014 and recently signed a two-year extension in May. While his net worth was not disclosed, the recent contract was reported to be $850,000 yearly.

Essendon football club has made the top-eight only six times in the past 17 seasons but has not won a final since 2004. The club is 16th on the AFL ladder, with just two wins from nine games this season.

The backer noted that his new contract could cause division among the members. Several others supported his recent resignation as people believed he was not the right person to execute the team.

Shedding some more light on the CEO’s lavish life, he started 2019 by selling his historic Kensington home after a stunning refurbishment. The couple purchased the 1888 house at 79 Gower St. for $920,000 five years ago. As the house was said to be “very spooky and quite gloomy,” they renovated it with a contemporary twist and grabbed the deal of $1.575 million.

CEO Of Essendon Football Club: Why Is Xavier Campbell Leaving?

As the consequences of the unsuccessful Clarko offer grew, Bombers CEO Xavier Campbell resigned as CEO of Essendon. He left his position amid tension at the AFL team after the futile attempt to sign Alastair Clarkson. 

After joining the Bombers in 2009 and being named CEO in 2014, Campbell announced his departure Wednesday morning during a meeting with the employees and players, concluding a 13-year relationship.

Less than three days after telling the media that the board and the incoming president, David Barham, would back him, Campbell announced his resignation. He was rehired as CEO in May on a two-year deal that would last through the end of the 2024 campaign.

He had backed Ben Rutten, the recently fired coach. The club was thrown on its head by last week’s board meeting, where Barham replaced Brasher as president and then an unsuccessful search for Alastair Clarkson.
