Jesse Manalastas Robredo was a Filipino politician who served as Secretary of the Interior and also for Local Government in President Benigno Aquino III’s administration from 2010 to 2012. Robredo was a Liberal Party member. Robredo served as Mayor of Naga, Camarines Sur, for six terms beginning in 1988.
In acknowledgment of his efforts as mayor of Naga, Robredo received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for his service in government, making him the first Filipino mayor to receive such an accolade. In July 2010, he was named to President Aquino’s Cabinet.
Robredo was killed on August 18, 2012, when the small aircraft he was flying crashed off the coast of Masbate Island due to engine failure.
His wife, who is currently Vice President Leni Robredo, and three kids, as well as his siblings, survive him. His funeral was conducted in Naga’s Archbishop’s Palace before being moved to Malacanang Palace for a ceremonial wake on August 24, 2012. His ashes were then returned to his homeland of Naga and were cremated.
