The slow left-arm orthodox spin bowler made his debut for the Blackcaps in October 2018. He was born on October 21, 1988, in Maharashtra, Mumbai, India. But in 1996, his family moved to New Zealand when he was only eight.
He became the third bowler in the history of Test cricket to take ten wickets in an inning. He made that record on December 4, 2021.
The cricketer got his primary education in India from Mount Mary School Goregaon West, Mumbai. Later, after shifting to New Zealand, he got his degree from Avondale College.

The spin bowler wore Sherwani as his wedding dress and shared some wedding images on his official Instagram.
The pair celebrated their 2nd anniversary on January 2, 2017, and Ajaz posted their image mentioning their anniversary date.

The spin bowler has two sisters in the family, Tanzeel Patel, and Sana Patel.
His father serves as the Refrigeration specialist in Aukland and runs his shop there, whereas his mom started teaching after they shifted to New Zealand.
The cricketer shared his childhood image on September 6, 2013. On the same day, he took a four-wicket haul in Mumbai on the first day of 2nd test match in the district match.
Though his surname is used mainly by Hindus but following his Instagram posts, he is often seen celebrating Eid. No doubt, he mentioned himself as Muslim.
After Patel’s incredible match on December 2021, his spouse Nilofer mentioned that his partner’s performance was for their daughter. Nilofer said she is eager to tell her daughter what his dad has achieved in an interview with TVNZ.
Patel’s mother said, “they began to think something incredible would happen as he continued to inflict destruction against India’s batting lineup.” The spinner took 14-225 against Indies, including a ‘PERFECT 10’.
