Al-Zawahiri completed his medical studies at Cairo University in 1974 and received the grade of gayyid giddan, which is roughly equivalent to a “B” on the American grading scale.

He then completed three years of service as a surgeon in the Egyptian Army before opening a clinic in Maadi close to his parents.

Because he was a qualified surgeon, he joined Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda and served as the terrorist leader’s physician and counselor. Initially, he had encountered Bin Laden in Jeddah in 1986.

In 1981, Ayman al-Zawahiri flew to Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, where he worked as a nurse treating injured refugees in a Red Crescent facility.

There, he became friends with Ahmed Khadr, and the two of them constantly discussed the necessity of an Islamic government and the requirements of the Afghan people.

According to CNN National Security Analyst Peter Bergen, Zawahiri “was not a charismatic commander in the style of Bin Laden.” He didn’t show himself to be a particularly capable commander of al-Qaeda.

Zawahiri’s apparent improved comfort and communication skills have coincided with the Taliban’s seizure of Afghanistan and the consolidation of power of significant al-Qaeda affiliates within its de facto administration.

Zawahiri’s final known speech was an audio message distributed on July 13 by al Qaeda’s media wing.
