US president Joe Biden made it clear in his statement on Monday. Ayman al-Zawahiri, the commander of Al-Qaeda, was assassinated by the United States during an attack in Kabul.

He was slain on Sunday during a CIA counterterrorism operation in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. According to officials, the drone reportedly launched two missiles at Zawahiri as he was on the balcony of a safe home.

Ayman Al-Zawahiri Parents Rabie al-Zawahiri and Umayma Azzam

Ayman Al-Zawahiri was born Ayman Mohammed Rabie al-Zawahiri on June 19, 1951, in Giza, Egypt, to his parents, Mohammed Rabie al-Zawahiri and Umayma Azzam.

Al-Zawahiri hails from an affluent and renowned family that offers him a background established solidly in both religion and politics. The family came from the little town of Zawahiri in Saudi Arabia’s Badr area, which belonged to the Harbi tribe.

Both his parents came from moneyed backgrounds. Zawahiri’s father, Mohammed Rabie al-Zawahiri, was born in Kafr Ash Sheikh Dhawahri, Sharqi Governorate, into a big family of physicians and intellectuals.

One of the leader’s grandfathers was Sheikh Muhammad al-Ahmadi al-Zawahiri during the 19th century. Besides, Mohammed graduated from Cairo University as a physician and a pharmacy professor.

Similarly, Ayman Al-mother, Zawahiri’s Umayma Azzam, was born into a well-to-do, politically engaged family. She was the female child of Abdel-Wahhab Azzam, an erudite scholar who served as chairperson of Cairo University. He claimed to have a strong bond with his mother.

Moreover, Abdel held the positions of ambassador to Pakistan, the founder and inaugural parson of King Saud University, and his brother Azzam Pasha, the Arab League’s founding secretary-general.

According to US authorities, a CIA drone attack in Afghanistan killed al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri. They further said that while other family members were present, Zawahiri was the only one who perished.

How Many Siblings Does Ayman Al-Zawahiri Have?

Ayman Al-Zawahiri is not the only child of his parents, Mohammed Rabie and Umayma. He is one of the four offspring of the Al-Zawahiri family.

He looked up to her brother Mahfouz Azzam as a young adult. He has a twin sister named Heba Mohamed al-Zawahiri and a younger brother named Muhammad al-Zawahiri.

Heba Mohamed al-Zawahiri, Al-sister, Zawahiri is a professor of medical oncology at Cairo University’s National Cancer Institute. She characterized her brother as quiet and timid.

Ayman Al-Zawahiri Personal Life And Family

According to some reports, Osama bin Laden’s Successor, Ayman Al-Zawahiri, has been married four times. However, only two of his spouses are made public.

In 1978, Al-Zawahiri married Azza Ahmed Newari, a philosophy major at Cairo University. The wedding was held at the Continental Hotel on Opera Square in a private ceremony.

With his wife, Azza, Al-Zawahiri had a son, Mohammed, as well as four daughters, Fatima (born in 1981), Umayma (born in 1983), Nabila (born in 1986), and Khadiga (born in 1987).

In a US airstrike on Afghanistan in late December 2001, after the September 11 attacks on the United States, Azza, his first wife, and two of their six children, Mohammad and Aisha, were killed. After she died in 2001, he married Umaima Hassan. 

Additionally, he has a maternal connection to the House of Saud through his wife, Muna, who is married to Mohammed bin Faisal Al Saud, the late king Faisal’s son. Muna is the daughter of Azzam Pasha, his maternal great-uncle.
