She grew up in Union City and Fremont with her mother. Her parents were never married. 

Brooke was born when her mom was still in college. Her mom dropped out and worked as a bank teller to raise her.

After Brooke turned 11, her mother became a high school counselor. She had not met her father until the age of 21. Her father finally responded to her messages when she sent him a notice of her graduation from UC Berkeley in 2003. He lived in El Salvador with his wife and two sons.

He now lives in Germany and they have become quite close since then.

Brooke Jenkins is a district attorney for San Francisco. Jenkins has prior experience in corporate law. 

She was the previous head prosecutor for hate crimes at the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office from 2014 to 2021. Later, Jenkins was promoted to the homicide unit and then the sexual assault unit.

Jenkins left the District Attorney’s Office in October 2021 due to growing frustration with its strategy. She prosecuted almost 25 criminal jury trials at the time of her resignation and finished over 100 preliminary hearings.

 

 

Before joining the San Francisco District Attorney’s office, Brooke worked for years as a private attorney in the Bay Area and Atlanta. To support the recall effort against San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin, she announced her resignation in October 2021.

On July 7, 2022, Mayor London Breed announced that Jenkins would take over for Chesa Boudin to complete the remainder of his tenure. On July 8, she took the oath of office.

Brooke enrolled at the University of California in 1999 and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and African-American Studies in 2003.

The same year, she began studying at the University of Chicago Law School and received her J.D. in 2006.

She began working as a Summer Associate with Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP in July 2005 and was there for two months, finishing up in August 2005.

Brooke later spent nearly three years, from September 2006 to October 2009, as an Associate at King and Spalding. Jenkins then started working at NCAA for a year, from 2009 to 2010, as an Assistant Director of Enforcement.
