He began his professional career with Weber State University's football team. In 1997, he participated in four games as a freshman and redshirted in 1996. However, in 1998, he tore his ACL during spring practice, which caused him to fall farther down the depth chart for the squad

After transferring to Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, he defeated Fred Salanoa to earn the team's starting quarterback position.
