Heupel was hired after three seasons as head coach at UCF, with a 28-8 record. That included an unbeaten regular season, the AAC championship, and a 2018 Fiesta Bowl defeat to LSU. After that, he posted records of 10-3 the following year and 6-4 in the 2020 season, which was cut short by COVID-19.
