Derek Schmidt Is Married To His Wife, Jennifer Schmidt
Derek has been married to his wife, Jennifer Schmidt, since 2011. Jennifer is a professor of law by profession.
Jennifer Schmidt works at the nexus of law and public policy. She began working as a part-time faculty member at K.U. Law in 2008, was promoted to associate clinical professor in 2017 and was hired as a law lecturer in 2022. Before joining K.U. Law, she served as senior counsel to U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), counsel to the Subcommittee on the Courts of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, and legislative assistant to U.S. Rep. Jack Fields (R-Texas), and legislative assistant to U.S. Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kansas).
She additionally worked at the state level as the speaker of the Kansas House of Representatives' chief of staff. Schmidt played a significant role in state and federal legislation pertaining to prescription drug abuse, youth bullying, the IRS, intellectual property, class action lawsuit reform, and veterans' benefits.
Furthermore, Jennifer co-anchored the live broadcast of the Kansas governor's annual State of the State address until 2016. She was also the host and producer of the public affairs television broadcast "Ask Your Legislator," which aired statewide on Kansas Public Television stations.
Furthermore, Jennifer held the senior fellow position for two terms at the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics. She looked after the study groups acting on "Women in Politics: Career Stories" and "Gender, Race, and Religion in Politics" while there.
Likewise, most recently, she served as the co-chair of the Kansas Youth Suicide Prevention Task Force, which was established by the Kansas Attorney General and The Tower Mental Health Foundation. She was also an outspoken supporter of the 2019 legislation that established the Kansas Youth Suicide Prevention Coordinator position.
Jennifer graduated with a J.D. from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1994.
