After his excellent display in Australian rules football, it was clear that Hedley had all the skills required to become a coming-of-age punter in American football. So, the scouts gave him the idea to move to the United States.
However, Hedley had academic issues and didn’t have the grades to join junior college. He wasn’t economically sound either. He had a stake in a tattoo shop he started with his friend. He sold that stake and made his journey to the US.

Miami Punter Lou Hedley Takes The World By Storm
Lou Hedley was deemed one of the unique punters, but very few expected him to be this successful.
As a Hurricanes sophomore, the 29-year-old had an exceptional first season with the team. He averaged 43.9 yards per punt on 64 punts. He had a long punt of 51 yards in the home opener versus Bethune-Cookman, introducing himself to American football.
Likewise, his 2020 season was arguably one of the best seasons in the history of Miami punter. He averaged 47.3 yards per punt, ranking 2nd in FBS in the regular season in punting. He also had a long punt of 60 yards, beating his old record by a wide margin.
As a result, he was the finalist for the Ray Guy award in 2020. Hedley fell short of winning the award, but he had won the hearts of every Miami fan then and there.
During the 2020 season, Lou was recognized with Associated Press second-team All-America honors. He also earned second-team All-ACC recognition. The former Australian rules footballer was named ACC Specialist of the Week two times.
