Wanganeen is an indigenous football player who played for the Hawthorn Football Club. He was once a bright player expected to succeed in Australian Rules Football, but regrettably, he never rose to the status of a superstar.

Derick played for the Hawthorn Football club between 2011 to 2014. He was allowed to stay on Hawthorn’s rookie list for a maximum of three years, but at the end of the previous campaign, he had to be delisted and later re-selected at number 33 in the rookie draft. Derick’s football team eventually delisted the defender on October 9, 2014.

Recently, indigenous players in the ARL have faced racism and are abused. As per the Guardian, Wanganeen’s former employer, Hawthorn Football Club, has been advised to deliver monetary compensation and issue a public apology to First Nations players and families affected by apparent “bullying and intimidation” at the AFL club.

The Hawthorn players have said that they were pushed to choose between their personal lives and professional careers. One of the players was even instructed to abort a partner’s pregnancy so they could concentrate on training.

Derick’s former team, Hawthorn Football Club, will be in action against the West Coast Eagles on Friday, September 30, 2022.
