With the encouragement of her PE instructor Phil Kearns, she joined the Hawkhill Harriers, a local athletic club, when she was 12. She immediately developed an aptitude for distance running while being coached by Harry Bennett, and at age 18, she won her first UK championships.

In the wake of Bennett's passing, McColgan trained by herself ahead of the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. As Liz Lynch, she won the 10,000-meter gold medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, finishing over 12 seconds ahead of the next competitor and earning the host nation its lone athletics gold medal.

In 1988, competing under the name Liz McColgan, she beat Kristiansen in Oslo with a time of 31:06.99, breaking her UK mark. A little over three months later, she finished the first women's 10,000-meter race at the Seoul Olympics at 31:08.44 to win an Olympic silver medal.

Olga Bondarenko of the Soviet Union beat her. In the 3,000-meter race at the 1989 World Indoor Championships, McColgan took home silver.

At the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand, she won gold in the 10,000 meters and bronze in the 3,000 meters, making her the only Scot to defend a Commonwealth title successfully.

Due to pregnancy, she missed the remainder of the 1990 campaign; in November, she gave birth to her daughter, future Olympian Eilish. The moment she revealed she was pregnant, Nike cut her off.

Eilish Mccolgan's father's name is Peter McColgan. He is a Northern Irish former steeplechaser. 

With times of 7:54.48 for the 3000 meters inside and 5:31.09 and 8:27.93 for the 2 km and 3 km Steeplechase outdoors, McColgan maintains the Northern Irish records.

County Tyrone's Strabane is where McColgan was born. His schooling was at Omagh CBS. He first started competing in sports at 17, and Malcolm McCausland was his coach until 1986. 

The same year, McColgan competed for Northern Ireland in the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh and finished in the top three of the 3000 and 5000-meter races.

Additionally, he competed for Great Britain in the Steeplechase at Japan's 1991 World Athletics Championships.

She took home two medals in 2006: a silver in the 1500 meters at the Scottish Schools Championships and a bronze at the International Under-17s Schools Championships.

She finished sixth in the 1500 meters in the Scottish Senior Championships in 2007. In the 1500 meters, she took up a bronze medal at the 2008 Scottish Indoor Championships.

In the 1500 meters at the 2011 UK Indoor Championships, she finished fourth, and in the 2011 UK Outdoor Championships, she took home the silver medal in the 5000 meters. She took first place in the 1500-meter race at the 2011 Scottish University Championships.

She won two gold medals at the 2012 Scottish Universities Indoor Championships by first placing in the 1500 and 3000-meter races.

She was the only sportsperson to complete the race in under ten minutes and the only British person to meet the "A" qualification level. McColgan decided not to compete in the 2012 European Athletics Championships in Helsinki, Finland, after earning an Olympic qualification.

She broke Paula Radcliffe's record of 14:51 established in 2003 by running the 5 km road event in Dubai in 14:48 in February 2022 to set a new British record. The unofficial 14:57 run by McColgan's mother in 1991 was surpassed, and she fell four seconds shy of European history.
