Salas was one of six children and the youngest of six to be born in Guantanamo on June 17, 1957. His early years in the Communist country passed uneventfully and were not nearly as challenging as they were for others at the same time. When he was nine years old, he had his first fascination with boxing.

They had a difficult existence since his father worked at Guantanamo for the United States government. Still, because of the money his father made, they were able to live comfortably despite the difficulties they faced.

After leaving college with a degree in physical education, he became an advocate for the institution he had previously attended. Between 1971 and 1978, Salas boxed on the challenging amateur circuit in Cuba, with a record of 46-5.
