John’s wife has been playing soccer since she was nine and continued to do so until she was 19. She is undoubtedly one of the greatest of her league as she had dedicated a sizable time of her life to this line of career.
While active as a player, her magic in the field was mesmerizing, and in most of the moments, her performance used to turn out as a matchwinner.

John Harkes married his wife Cindi Harkes three decades ago in 1992. John and Cindi bonded over their love for soccer.
The couple tied the knot on June 21, 1992, and have known each other for a much longer time than this. They haven’t mainly discussed the movement of their first interaction, but because of their athletic background, they might have met each other during some soccer events.
Six years after their marriage, Harkes cheated on Cindi with his teammate’s wife, Amy Ward. At the time, Amy had been married to Eric Wynalda for two years. While Amy and Eric divorced in 2008, ten years after the affair, Harkes and Cindi decided to give their relationship a second chance.
They recently celebrated their 30th anniversary this June. John wrote, “Happy Anniversary to my best friend, soul mate, my love ❤️ It’s not the destination, it’s the person on the journey you share life with! Love you!”
The two usually go on bike rides in the morning. In March 2022, he took a moment to appreciate his wife during women history month.

John Harkes and his wife Cindi Harkes are former professional soccer players. Cindi has been active as a coach for fifteen years.
Cindi has been playing soccer since her childhood. After observing her potential in the field, Braddock Road Youth Club had Cindi play from U8 to U19. Her club, BRYC Galaxy, won the Virginia State Cup for three of those years.
She was also selected for the U19 Youth National Team and was a member of the U12, U14, U16, and U19 ODP Teams for the State and Region. At WT Woodson High School, she was a four-year starter and was named to the All-Met team since Sophomore.
In her senior year, she was given the title of the Woodson Athlete of the Year, which is one of her most outstanding achievements that she recalls in most of her interviews. John’s wife started for the University of Virginia’s Varsity squad for all four years and was a three-time All-ACC selection and an NCAA Academic All-American.
She also has experience playing the game outside the country. She had a chance to represent her country in the big and most popular leagues of the United Kingdom. Some of the UK clubs for which she played are Sheffield Wednesday Ladies and the Stanton Rangers.
Cindi has coached the Washington Spirit for 15 years and is a WT Woodson Hall of Famer. She was inducted in the VA/DC Soccer Hall of Fame as a player in March 22, 2016. Her husband was inducted in 2006.
She played professionally with the National Champions Maryland Pride before switching to coaching, and she also won three USASA National Championships with her club team, SA United. Cindi is the co-founder of the Team Harkes Soccer School for Girls summer camps.
John Harkes And His Wife Cindi Harkes Share Three Kids
John Harkes and Cindi Harked are parents to three kids, Ian Harkes, Lauren Harkes and Lily Harkes. Cindi’s kids have followed in their footsteps to become soccer players.
Their son Ian Harkes won the Hermann Trophy in 2016 while playing for John’s former team, D.C. United, and is currently playing first-team football for Dundee United in Scotland.
The Harkes family values the children’s participation in soccer more than anything else. James, John’s father, played professional soccer since he was young and grew up just a few streets from the stadium. His daughter Lauren Harkes played collegiately at Clemson University.
One of the family’s gifted athletes, Lauren, is excellent with the ball. As a freshman in 2015, she participated in 10 games and started three of them. She scored her first goal in the season opener against the College of Charleston. In her debut season of intercollegiate soccer, she logged 305 minutes on the field.
Lauren played every game in her most recent season with the Bluejays in 2019, starting 16 of the 18 games. Harkes played on the field for 1,177 minutes, recording two assists and 19 shots.
Lily Harkes is a midfielder for Elon University’s women’s soccer team. The junior midfielder’s family has previously succeeded in getting their team to the NCAA tournament.
She is not the only member of the family to accomplish this. The parents and two older siblings of Harkes have all qualified for the NCAA tournament and won conference titles.
