Marie Yovanovitch was the focus of a conspiracy-driven slander campaign as ambassador to Ukraine, which was aided by President Donald Trump and his friends. 

In May 2019, Trump abruptly removed Yovanovitch from her role, citing Trump surrogates’ assertions that she was obstructing Trump’s efforts to urge Ukraine to investigate his political competitor, former Vice President and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden.

Yovanovitch’s dismissal came after Trump attempted to convince Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky to probe Biden in a phone call in July 2019.

The House of Representatives launched an impeachment investigation into Trump following a whistleblower complaint about the phone call and attempts to cover it up. In the investigation, Yovanovitch testified in front of multiple House committees.
