Mary Peltola is married to her husband, Gene Peltola, the Bureau of Indian Affairs Alaska Region director. 

She had two previous marriages before she wed Gene Peltola. Mary was previously married to pilot Jonathan Kapsner, with whom she had two children.

After breaking up her relationship with Jonathan, she married a lawyer Joe G.Nelson with whom she had two children.

Mary's husband Gene was hired after spending more than three decades working for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, another federal organization. He has prior experience in both municipal government and business.

In addition,  Peltola also served the City of Bethel as vice-mayor and council member.

Mary Peltola was born on August 31, 1973, in Anchorage, Alaska, U.S. Mary is a politician from the United States and the representative-elect for Alaska's at-large congressional district.

Gene Peltola was on the boards of Bethel Native Corporation, Bethel Solutions, LLC, and Bethel Services Inc. from 2010 to 2012. He has served on the boards of Bethel Native Corporation and Bethel Solutions, LLC, as well as Bethel Services Inc.

As the director of the Federal Subsistence Management Program in Alaska, Peltola oversaw the implementation of subsistence management on all federal properties.

Gene will be in charge of the BIA offices in Anchorage and Fairbanks after being appointed to the director position. Together, the offices serve 227 Alaska Native tribes.

Mary Peltola and her husband Gene have been celebrating after she won a special election to serve as Alaska's lone US representative.

She defeated Republican Sarah Palin in the race for the U.S. House, taking up the seat that belonged to the late Congressman Don Young. 

Alaska Native Peltola, who outperformed Palin by three percentage points, will be the first to hold a congressional seat.

On a live feed from the Division of Elections headquarters in Juneau on Wednesday afternoon, the preliminary results of Alaska's first ranked-choice election were made public.

When first-choice votes alone were taken into account, Sarah Palin behind Peltola, who served as Bethel's state House representative for ten years, by nearly nine percentage points. Palin received 48.5% of the vote, while Peltola received 51.5%.

Since their time in Juneau, when Palin was the governor, and Peltola was a legislator, the two have remained close friends. 

The results of the election will be confirmed on Friday. Peltola will probably take the oath of office the week of September 12 when the House reconvenes following its summer break.

A special session could be called by the Speaker of the House simply to oath Peltola in before the regular session begins.

Peltola's term won't finish until at least January. She is currently running for the upcoming full term, which will be on the ballot in November, with Palin and Begich.

In the Democratic primary, Peltola defeated incumbent Ivan Martin Ivan of Akiak and won a seat in the Alaska House of Representatives. 

She had positions on several standing committees throughout her time in the House, including those for finance, resources, and health and social services.

She enjoys a friendly connection with Palin, who once gave Peltola's family use of the trampoline in their backyard.

Even though Peltola won on Wednesday, she and Palin will still compete in November to fill the state's only House seat for the upcoming full term.

Her 49th birthday was the day of the victory, and she declared it a "GOOD DAY" in a tweet immediately following the state elections division's release of the first round of results under its new ranked-choice voting method.
