He loved playing instruments but had a different feeling about athletic activities, especially sports. Taylor was a natural at sports, whether golf, hockey, or baseball, even though he used to play the guitar. Taylor excelled in collegiate golf at Kent State, where his junior year saw him take home the coveted Porter Cup.

But before determining that golf was the best option, Taylor also participated in rep baseball, hockey, and house league for the Richmond Hill Phoenix and his school team, Bayview Secondary, where he was a pitcher/first baseman and a power hitter. When he was a teenager, Taylor once hoped to get a baseball scholarship to a college in the United States, but he ultimately settled for a free golf ticket at Kent State.

After a four-month absence due to a rib ailment, he finished second in his third appearance. The most in the field with 28 birdies.
