Nadhim Zahawi, who took over for Rishi Sunak in Boris Johnson’s administration, is seen as a rising star among Conservatives. Sunak resigned on Tuesday, following the latest fiasco to hit Johnson’s administration and the health minister Sajid Javid who also good-by his post.

The Iraqi-born is now the first person to have held the chancellor position who was not born in the United Kingdom. The Chancellor of the Exchequer is the Chief Executive Officer of Her Majesty’s Treasury and a senior minister of the Crown in the Government of the United Kingdom. To put it plainly, the post is equivalent to that of a finance minister in other countries.

Nadhim Zahawi was born Nāẓim az-Zahāwī on June 2, 1967, in Baghdad, Iraq Republic.

Who Are Nadhim Zahawi Parents? 

 55 years-old politician was raised by his Kurdish parents in Sussex, the South East England county, instead of Iraq.

Zahawi has kept his parents’ identity a secret. As a result, no information about them has come to the internet. But speaking with BBC, he gave away something of his traumatic past. “I would have been drafted into the Iraqi army, had to go to the front line, and probably die.”

His family was well-connected and highly respected in Iraq. 

Zahawi’s grandfather was the governor of the Central Bank of Iraq, and his signature appeared on the country’s banknotes. Later, Zahawi’s father, a local businessman, had a small feud with the authorities of Saddam Hussein and was forced to flee from Iraq and located to Britain.

Zahawi, an avid rider and show jumper married his lover Lana Saib in 2004. The couple has three children.

He and his wife are also said to possess five homes totaling £17 million, three in London, one in Warwickshire, and one in Dubai. Lana is also the owner and co-director of a firm called ‘Zahawi Warren Limited,’ which was founded on June 10, 2020. Ahmad Shanshal and Jaafar Shanshal are the two sons of the Zahawi family and the company’s directors.

However, Lana Saib owns the proprietor of a company called ‘Zahawi Warren Limited,’ with a 75%+ stake. The company was previously named ‘Warren Medical Limited, but it was immediately changed after just a day of its announcement to its present name. Besides, Lana and the Shanshal brothers also serve on the boards of two other family-owned businesses, ‘Zahawi & Zahawi Limited’ and ‘Zahawi Properties Limited.’ 

Little is known about Zahawi’s economic beliefs; however, he has previously called for tax reduction and is now in charge of an increasingly shaky economy.

What Is Nadhim Zahawi’s Ethnicity?

Nadhim Zahawi was born to Iraqi Kurdish parents. Hence his ethnicity is ‘Iraqi Kurds’ or ‘The Kurds’ of Kurdish origin.

According to the CIA World Factbook, the Kurds are Iraq’s biggest ethnic minority, accounting for between 20% and 26.5 percent of the country’s population. The Kurdish, however, spreads all over Western Asia in Iran, Turkey, and Syria; the Iraqi Kurds are people of Kurdish heritage born or living in Iraq.

Zahawi worked in the oil business after graduating as a chemical engineer. He amassed a fortune on his own and was elected to the British parliament in 2010. In 2016, he favored Brexit. Since May 2010, Nadhim Zahawi has served as the Conservative MP for Stratford-upon-Avon and resigned in 2018.
