Ime Udoka, the Boston Celtics’ head coach, allegedly had an “improper” personal connection with a female member of the organization, as stated by Shams Charania of The Athletic on his Twitter. Charania noted that this connection was one based on mutual consent.

Two years later, Charania decided to give his school newspaper, the New Trier News, an attempt to work there during his junior year and see where it took him.

While he was working his way up to become one of the editors for the paper’s sports department, he also wanted to try his hand at writing about the NBA, which was his genuine passion.

He Started A Bulls Blog on ChicagoNow

Due to this, he decided to establish a Bulls blog on ChicagoNow, a local website that the Chicago Tribune owns. On the blog, he would write new posts every day and provide a game recap for no charge to compile a body of work.

When Charania was a high school student, one of the things that set him apart from other students was his tenacious ability to network and try to build sources. He made unsolicited phone calls to many team executives and agents from Europe and the NBA to find information.

Shams can recall the initial reactions he received from others in the industry. When it took place, it was like a thrill for the younger version of Shams. Because he had never attempted these things before, he was anxious about making mistakes in either what he said or did.

A portion of him couldn’t help but question why people bothered to communicate with a child like him. When he thinks back on it now, he realizes that there are a lot of extraordinary individuals working in the field, and if you approach things courteously and appropriately, they will be delighted to assist you.

Charania Started Submitting Pieces To RealGM

Consequently, Charania started cultivating sources and submitting pieces to Reina at RealGM even though he was an editor at the New Trier News, writing for ChicagoNow, and concentrating on his academics in the 11th and 12th grades.

Even during shifts at the hospital, he maintained contact with sources by email and text message, ensuring he never lost sight of his long-term objectives.

After receiving his diploma from New Trier in 2012, Charania enrolled at Loyola University Chicago in August of the same year and decided to concentrate on communications there.

When he signed up for Twitter in August of 2010, only a few months before it became the phenomenon it is today, he took a significant step toward realizing his vision for the future, even though he was probably unaware of the significance of this development at the time.

And it was Twitter that would be the one to steadily help boost Shams’ brand as the RealGM scoops started trickling in. On March 1, 2013, he said that forward Shavlik Randolph would be leaving China to accept a 10-day deal with the Boston Celtics. 

This was followed up on March 19 by breaking Malcolm Thomas’ 10-day pact with Chicago, which was also significant and provided the college freshman with another addicting adrenaline high. Both of these events gave the college freshman a considerable amount of adrenaline.

Charania’s efforts to maintain a healthy balance between his academic pursuits and his media career were fraught with difficulty.

When Shams was rushing home one night after a game in Milwaukee, he got a speeding ticket as he was trying to get enough sleep so that he could perform well in class the next day. He was the first to break the news that Cartier Martin had signed a 10-day deal with the Atlanta Hawks the previous morning.

Charania could get through all of those late-night drives because he knew that many of his contemporaries in writing which he looked up to at the time, were reassuring him that Shams was walking on the right way and that he should continue to follow it.

At 19, he broke an incredible deal that became one of the most important news items of the 2013-2014 NBA season.

That night, Shams got over 4,000 new Twitter followers, which was a significant accomplishment for him. Outside of his intimate group of basketball journalists and industry insiders, he received considerable additional recognition and interest.
