From 2001 through 2008, he worked with the Heat as an assistant coach and director of scouting. During that period, the team won the NBA Finals in 2006. In the 2008–09 season, he was given the head coach position. Under Spoelstra, the Heat appeared in the NBA Finals four times in a row (2011–2014) after signing free agents LeBron James and Chris Bosh in 2010 while winning the title in 2012 and 2013. In 2020, Spoelstra participated as head coach in the NBA Finals for the fifth time.

Early Life

He was born and raised in Buffalo, New York, and by the late 1970s, had relocated to Portland, Oregon. Before entering Jesuit High School in Beaverton, Oregon, where he excelled as a point guard for the basketball team, he attended Raleigh Hills Elementary and Whitford Jr. High School in Portland.

Spoelstra received offers for basketball scholarships and ultimately chose to attend his hometown university, the University of Portland. He received the West Coast Conference (WCC) freshman of the year award in 1989. For four years, Spoelstra started at point guard for the Pilots and averaged 9.2 points, 4.4 assists, and 2.4 rebounds per game.

Coaching Career

He started his career as a basketball coach outside the USA. In 1993, he worked as a player-assistant coach for TuS Herten, a German professional basketball team headquartered in Westphalia, for two years in the Basketball Bundesliga's second tier. Spoelstra received a second two-year contract offer from the team in 1995, but the Miami Heat of the NBA also gave him a job opportunity.

Following Pat Riley's resignation in April 2008, Spoelstra took over as the Miami Heat's head coach. He decided to accept the Heat post even though both offers were attractive. Riley's chosen replacement was Spoelstra. Despite the Heat's league-worst record of 15-67 the previous season, he guided the team to the NBA Playoffs in his first season in that position.

The Heat made it to the 2011 NBA Finals under Spoelstra's leadership, but the Dallas Mavericks defeated them in six games. After that, his season was average, but the team's management supported him despite his mediocre performance. The team's project looked to have a promising future under his guidance. When the Heat had the best record in the Eastern Conference at the time of selection, Spoelstra was chosen to serve as the head coach of the 2013 Eastern Conference All-Stars in the 2013 NBA All-Star Game. Later, he led the Heat to a winning streak of 27 games.

The Heat extended Spoelstra's contract to an undisclosed multi-year agreement on September 29, 2013. Although specifics were not made public, Spoelstra anticipated getting a pay boost and an expanded role in the front office. As the third coach to take his team to four straight Finals, Spoelstra led the Heat to the 2014 NBA Finals. On December 16, 2017, Spoelstra earned his 455th victory as the Heat's head coach, passing Riley to become the franchise's winningest coach.

After guiding the Heat to a 30-win record in their final 41 games, Spoelstra was named the NBCA Co-Coach of the Year. Spoelstra led the Miami Heat back to the 2020 NBA Finals during the 2019–20 season, losing 4–2 to the Los Angeles Lakers. Spoelstra recorded his 600th victory on April 28, 2021, making him the sixth head coach in NBA history to amass 600 wins with a single squad. He was selected to serve as the Eastern Conference's head coach for the 2022 NBA All-Star Game on February 6, 2022.
