The chambermaid turn politician said that having experienced intimidation, including being doused with water and racially insulted on the hotel picket line, politics did not scare her.

The local battle in the Val-de-Marne has echoes of France’s fraught national election campaign. The recently re-elected Macron needs a majority of his centrist grouping in order to have a free hand to implement his domestic policy, including raising the pension age and overhauling benefits.

Rachel Keke’s Origin

Rachel Keke was born on May 30, 1974, in Abobo, Ivory Coast. Her patriarch was a bus driver, and her birth mother sold clothing until her death when Rachel was 12.

She was one of the leaders of a successful strike by housekeepers at the Ibis hotel in Batignolles, Paris. Twenty workers who were employed as subcontractors struck for better pay and improved working conditions beginning in July 2019 and signed a deal winning virtually all of their bids in May 2021.

She resonated with problems faced by other workers. Problems like supermarket checkout staff or shop security guards who stand all day without being allowed to sit down.
