College career

Barber played football for the Virginia Cavaliers while attending the University of Virginia on a sports scholarship. From 1994 to 1996, he played defensive back for the Cavaliers after redshirting in 1993. He additionally worked as a kick returner in 1994 and 1996, returning ten kickoffs for a total of 171 yards in 1994 and three for 36 yards in 1996.
