South African Boxer Simiso Buthelezi Dead At The Age Of 24, Brain Injury Linked To His Death Cause

Simiso Buthelezi, a South African boxer, died in hospital on Sunday night after suffering a head injury in the ring.

A boxing video in which a boxer throws punches at an unidentified opponent is now trending on social media.

The footage turns out to be of Simiso, in which his opponent landed a strong jab on Buthelezi's chin, causing severe brain damage.

The Buthelezi family and Boxing South Africa appreciate the Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture's sincere condolences.

The lightweight boxer was fighting for the WBF All Africa lightweight championship.

Buthelezi was leading the fight going into the tenth round, having boxed well, when the awful events occurred.

He turned to an empty corner after knocking his opponent down, and the ref re-starting the battle, throwing many punches at an unseen opponent, forcing the ref to stop the bout.

It was his first loss in five professional fights, which occurred in South Africa.

Buthelezi was rushed to the hospital and put into a coma after being treated by ringside doctors. He was previously said to be in "stable condition" before his untimely death.
