According to the police records, he was sentenced to 45 years in prison. Consequently, the 40-year-old is being held at Florida's New River Correctional Institution.

The Glades County Grand Jury charged Theophilus Tawon Brooks with first-degree murder in connection with the passing of Erica Vassell in early June 2011. In November 2014, he admitted to the lesser charge of second-degree murder and was given a 45-year prison term.

Erica Vassell Murder Case

At age 21, Erica Vassell was a free-spirited, energetic girl who lived in Glades County with her family. According to her father, Erica had a very caring side regarding her family, especially her siblings. She also frequently slept next to her mother even though she was the youngest in the house and was rather old.

But he also acknowledged his worries for his daughter's safety because her candor frequently got her into problems. As a result, the Vassell's were worried when Erica didn't return home after a Super Bowl party at Suzy B's Club in Clewiston in 2011.

At first, Erica's mother called her daughter frantically regularly. The family called 911 and reported missing after she didn't hear back from anyone. Four days later, on February 11, Erica's body was discovered in a rural area about four miles from the club on the side of a lonely road near a sugarcane field.

The first person to see her that day in the early morning hours was a driver, who quickly alerted the police after determining the wrapped figure was a human. Erica was dressed, and there were no indications of a sexual assault either.

Who Killed Miss Brown Sugar - Dateline Episode Of Erica Vassell Murder

In Clewiston, Florida, 21-year-old Erica Vassell disappears after a Super Bowl party, and the townspeople launch a search in the dateline episode.

At the time, the investigators kept the cause of Erica's death a secret. However, according to the stories that have come out since, she had many wounds to her face, abrasions all over her body, and tire tracks traveling in different directions, all of which suggested that she had been run over at least twice.

The fact that Erica had small holes on the back of her right shoulder and neck from shotshells and that her injuries were inconsistent with those from a traffic collision made it clear that her death was a homicide. However, her crushed pelvis was the recognized cause of death.
