Brittney Griner was biologically born a woman despite all the gender transformation rumors. She is the daughter of Sandra and Raymond Griner.

An American national star, basketball icon, and inspiration for women, Brittney looks precisely at how she was born and never underwent any orientation surgery. 

Brittney came out of the closet and first revealed her sexuality to the public in an interview on February 11, 2013. For a long time, she has endured harassment because of her sexual preference.

In 2013, she picked the courage to disclose her true identity, which was a massive shock to her parents and further led to differences between her and her father.

Though her father did not welcome Brittney with open arms, Brittney debunked the major rumor encompassing her life. She is not a transsexual just because her personality differs from other women’s. 

While she was in high school, she started undergoing rapid changes, and soon, she became unusually taller than her female friends. It did not just stop there; she was much stronger and tougher. Right from high school, Griner faced a lot of criticism for her appearance.

According to her, the only time she wore a woman’s dress was at her mother’s behest, which made her so uncomfortable that she said: “never again.” Her clothing and lifestyle can alarm a few as she shows so-called manly traits, but she is proud of her choice and how she dresses.

Brittney Griner has been in a couple of same-gender relationships over the years. She married her wife, Cherelle Watson, in 2019.

Both Griner and Watson attended Baylor University during their college days. They could bond and date for a couple of years before the wedding.

Watson is an NCCU Law Alumni with a degree in Political science and government. Cherelle Griner is, in fact, a speaker and activist who has been fighting her best to bring her partner home.

One of the primary reasons why people discuss Brittney’s sexual orientation is her love life and the relationships she has had over the years.

The basketball player has been in a same-sex relationship twice. Before her wedding to Cherelle, she was briefly married to Glory Johnson, a former basketball star.

Her first marriage to a fellow basketball player, Glory Johnson, was short-lived. The couple divorced in 2016 after one year of marriage.

Her now-wife, Cherelle Watson, later changed her name to Cherelle Griner. The couple married in June 2019, and Cherelle wholeheartedly supports Brittney. She has often been reported defending and protecting Griner as she still gets mocked for her sexual preferences.

Court Rejects Brittney Griner’s Appeal of Nine-Year Sentence

Brittney Griner is currently undergoing a drug trial after being detained on March 6 in Russia. Today, a few hours earlier, the Moscow court gave the hearing as Griner was found guilty of drug offenses, and she has been sentenced to a nine-year prison time.

U.S President Joe Biden has released a statement that reads, “Today, American citizen Brittney Griner received a prison sentence that is one more reminder of what the world already knew: Russia wrongfully detaining Brittney. It’s unacceptable, and I call on Russia to release her immediately so she can be with her wife, loved ones, friends, and teammates.”

After all the drama, she appealed for her sentence reduction on October 26, 2022. Unfortunately, the Russian high court rejected the appeal. As a result, the sentencing still stands. 

Basketball fans and followers still have hopes for her release as the US government could take some action in the days to come, whether it’s an exchange or some kind of negotiation.

Brittney Griner was born and raised in Houston, Texas, alongside her three siblings. She always had her parents, Raymond and Sandra Griner’s support growing up.

Griner is the youngest of three children and had a unique childhood. Her father, Raymond, served in the Marines stationed in Vietnam. As a result, Griner knew what kind of struggles and pain a vet family endured.
