Jo Koy holds American nationality.
The Nationality of Koy is Filipino-American. The identity of his biological father is not disclosed. Fred Harrison, an American who served in the US Air Force, was his stepfather. Josie Harrison, his mother, is from Quezon City, Philippines.
Koy's parents divorced when he was 13 years old, and his mother was left to raise all their children alone. His family moved to Los Vegas after finishing high school in Tacoma, Washington.
To be near Jo's elderly grandma, the family had to move to Los Vegas. At the age of 18, Jo adopted the stage name that was inspired by his childhood nickname. Jo, who frequently mentions his mother in his stand-up acts, traces his acting and humorous skills to her.

His mother encouraged their involvement in school talent shows as well as the conducting of impromptu performances for his family and friends.
While going door to door to sell the tickets for his show, he was spotted by a talent coordinator from Los Angeles, who later gave him a chance to Koy to make his debut on television on Bet's Comic View. He has been a part of Comic View for two seasons.
On July 23, 2012, he and comedian and TV broadcaster Michael YO launched their podcast, The Michael Yo and Jo Koy show. The comedian currently performs nationwide tours and appears as a weekly guest on The Adam Carolla Show podcast.
He is a member of the PodcastOne family and now hosts The Koy Pond, a weekly podcast. Jo Koy: In His Elements, a comedy spectacular with Filipino American comedians, DJs, and B-boys, was made available on Netflix on June 12, 2020.
