Angel Cotto, age 41, is a 5’7” former professional boxer from Puerto Rico.

Cotto appeared in global tournaments as an amateur, representing Puerto Rico in the lightweight and light welterweight divisions, which included the 1999 Pan American Games and the 2000 Olympics.

The former boxer was awarded a lightweight silver medal in the 1998 Junior World Championships. Three years after he began his professional career in 2001, Cotto won the WBO light welterweight title in 2004.

Between 2007 and 2009, he was ranked sixth in The Ring magazine’s active pound-for-pound rankings. Cotto began his career as a hard-hitting pressure fighter, but as he gained weight, he grew into a more refined boxer-puncher.

His boxing career was jeopardized when he suffered a severe injury in 2001. He reportedly dozed while driving to the gym at 5 a.m. and ended up crashing. The crash resulted in a fractured arm, necessitating hospitalization.

After retiring in 2017, he now owns and manages the “Promociones Miguel Cotto” boxing organization, which schedules fight cards in Puerto Rico.
