Clare Balding’s mother, Emma Hastings-Bass, has ties and friendships with the royal family.<\/p>\n

Clare Balding’s family tree is a colorful mix of nobility, royalty, and commoners who rose through the ranks to become members of high society. Clare is descended from the Earls of Derby,\u00a0 and the University of Derby, through her mother, Emma Hastings-Bass family.<\/p>\n

She is a direct descendant of William the Conqueror and seven other medieval kings, including Edwards I, II, and III, Henrys I, II, and III, and King John. Several forebears in her family tree also had horrible deaths.<\/p>\n

Her 13th great-grandmother was Margaret Countess of Salisbury, the last of the Plantagenets and a Catholic martyr who was messily beheaded as a frail old lady of 67 on the orders of Henry VIII in 1541. Her 14th great-grandfather was George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence (1449-1478), who, according to Shakespeare, is rumored to have drowned in a barrel of Malmsey wine.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The world-renowned horse trainer Ian Balding and his wife Emma Hastings-Bass welcomed Clare Victoria Balding on January 29, 1971. Being descended from the Earls of Derby, Clare’s maternal family has a well-established aristocratic history, and both of her parents’ sides of the family have a solid genetic affinity for horse training.<\/p>\n

After that, Ian Balding and his son Andrew, Clare’s younger brother, took control of the stables. Clare attended Downe School, close to Newbury, where she served as head girl and was a classmate of Miranda Hart, an actor, and comedian.<\/p>\n

Her mother’s maiden name reflected a change in the family surname when she was a youngster, resulting in a double entry. Peter Hastings, Clare’s maternal grandfather, inherited Sir William Bass’ estate in 1954, changing his and his children’s last names to Hastings-Bass by his uncle’s legacy.<\/p>\n

As the great-grandson of the 14th Earl, William Hastings-Bass, received the title of 17th Earl of Huntingdon after the 16th Earl passed away without offspring. William is Emma’s older brother.<\/p>\n
