Julia Carolyn Child was a television personality, author, and cooking instructor in the United States. She was married to Paul Cushing Child, an American civil servant, and diplomat.

With her first cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and following television shows, the most renowned of which was The French Chef, which debuted in 1963, she is credited with introducing French cuisine to the American audience.

Child founded The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and Culinary Arts in 1995 as a private philanthropic foundation to support her life’s work.

Paul Cushing Child, the husband of famed chef and author Julia Child, was an American civil servant, diplomat, and artist.

Child joined the Office of Strategic Services during WWII (OSS). While stationed in Kandy, Ceylon, he met Julia McWilliams, the OSS’s head of the OSS Secretariat’s Registry.

The couple married in Lumberville, Pennsylvania, on September 1, 1946, and later relocated to Washington, D.C. Child was noted for his refined palate and appreciation of foreign food.

Child joined the United States Foreign Service once his service with the OSS was completed, and he introduced his wife to good dining. Julia was appointed to the United States Information Agency as an exhibits officer by the United States State Department in 1948.

While in Paris, his wife grew interested in cooking and enrolled at the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu cooking school.

Paul was ten years Julia Child’s senior and regarded him as a refined gentleman when they first met. Due to their inability to procreate, the couple never had any children.

Julia and Paul were not blessed with a child. Julia agonized with the lack of children and grandchildren, but her career and Paul supported her. In his book “The French Chef in America,” Julia’s grandnephew Alex Prud’homme claimed that Paul didn’t want children as much as his wife.

Julia was a fan favorite of audiences from the moment she made her public television debut in 1963, and she was a well-known figure in American culture who was the subject of numerous references, including parodies in television and radio shows and skits.

Child died of kidney failure on August 13, 2004, in Montecito, California, at the age of 91.

Julia Child, who stood at 6-foot 2-inches (1.9 meters) tall and had a peculiar warbling voice, finished each concert with the phrase “Bon appétit!”

During her career, Child won multiple awards, including a Peabody Award (1964) and an Emmy Award (1966) for her television work, as well as a National Book Award (1980).

She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and was named to the French Legion of Honour in 2000. (2003). The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. has a piece of her kitchen and several of her kitchen equipment on exhibit.
