She first traveled to the country in 1993 after going through an orphan crisis. A year later, when she returned to the eastern European nation, she began teaching Vlad, only 12 at the time. Their romance began when Vlad turned 19, who is seven years old younger in age.
The historian was often invited to Vlad’s family home for supper. She initially saw Vlad as her student, however, they felt attracted to each other. Dunlop has said about her husband, as quoted in Daily Mail: ‘Of course, it never occurred to me that, you know. I noticed a stillness in Vlad, a peacefulness, I think is the word, that made him stand out.’
