The young jockey’s year got off to a rough start when she received a 24-day suspension to start the year.

The decision to suspend her was made when it was discovered that during the previous six months, she had violated the regulations regarding using the whip on one ride out of every 16.

In determining her penalty, the BHA referred to the ratio as both a concern and an aggravating aspect. It did, however, consider that one of the rider’s infractions occurred within three days of the six-month totting-up period being over. Her cumulative bans had initially lasted for a total of fourteen days.

The race that Mangan won on January 12 at Lingfield aboard the horse trained by David Evans, Midgetonamission, served as the impetus for the hearing. To lessen the severity of the punishment, the rider’s attorney, Rory Mac Neice, pointed out that Mangan had gone a significant amount of time without accumulating any suspensions; her most recent infraction occurred on September 4, 2021. Mac Neice also pointed out that Mangan is attempting to rebuild her career following an injury she sustained in 2019 that saw her break both ankles in a riding accident. However, since Mangan is now a claiming professional and not an apprentice, she does not have provision for a jockey coach. Mac Neice pointed this out.

Barker stated that the twenty-four-day suspension was reasonable while presenting the panel’s judgment. She was required to spend one day of her break attending classes at either the British Racing School in Newmarket or the National Horseracing College in Doncaster. Mangan’s suspension had been reduced by one-third, so she would not have to serve that portion immediately.
