Akim Aliu didn’t wait to contact the editor after Steve Simmons’ piece appeared. The 33-year-old athlete responded to Simmons’ article in a video by criticizing the seasoned hockey journalist for his careless and uninformed judgment.

Aliu responded with a blistering, concise message Sunday: I’m only addressing this that it’s all over the internet. I’ve seen Steve talk negatively about me for some time now, and the funny thing is I’ve never spoken to or met him in my life.

He found out what he said through other members of the Hockey Diversity Alliance. People like Steve are what’s wrong with society. This is the first time in history that the crucial conversation of race is prevalent. He believed his story and what the HDA was doing was significant reason for that.

Only a few of Aliu’s difficulties as a professional hockey player was mentioned. Without holding back, he even requested that Simmons be fired due to his actions.

He spent most of his time playing minor hockey in the east end of Toronto, where he was a part of numerous A and AA hockey teams, including the Minor Midget Toronto Aces during the Greater Toronto Hockey League’s 2003–2004 season (GTHL).
