Ernest “Ernie” Carroll was an Australian entertainment, radio, and television personality, comedic writer, puppeteer, television producer, and comic strip writer best known for his portrayal of Ossie Ostrich on Hey Hey It’s Saturday, and The Daryl, Cartoon Corner, and Ossie Show.
He is best known for his role as the puppet and voice of “Ossie Ostrich,” first on The Tarax Show and subsequently on the long-running and popular television program “Hey Hey It’s Saturday!” featuring Daryl Somers.
Carroll recruited Somers to appear on Cartoon Corner and took over as Ossie after Somers’ co-host, footballer Peter McKenna, had to withdraw. Carroll chose to replace McKenna with… one of the old puppet creatures he’d kept in a suitcase.
Carroll was infamous for attempting to keep the notion of Ossie apart from his function as a puppeteer, refusing to have his photo taken with the puppet, for example. In a 1993 piece on Carroll in the Melbourne Age, Nigel Kennedy informed viewers.
