David Coventry was born in New Zealand in 1969 and currently resides there with his wife, the author Laura Southgate. When William’s father was given a seven-year prison term in Macquarie Harbour for stealing three bullocks, he was only fourteen years old. When he discovered his father had been murdered and eaten by other fugitives, he was just fifteen years old.

William married Ann Lucas on December 14, 1834. Ann was a niece of John Pascoe Fawkner, one of Melbourne’s founding fathers, and the daughter of Richard Lucas and Elizabeth Fawkner. On December 14, 1834, William and Ann were wed at St. Mark’s in Pontville.

They were neighbors of Francis Cox and lived in the Melville Parish in Brighton, where William was granted 52 acres.

Mary Anne, the first child of William and Ann, was born in July 1835 and baptized there. Following that came Margaret Catherine in May 1839, William Richard in August 1837, Elizabeth Belinda in May 1836, and John Francis in December 1840.

The family relocated from Brighton to Circular Head at some point in 1842, where the subsequent child, Amelia Hannah, was born on December 10, 1842. On January 13, 1843, she underwent baptism in the nearby Church of England.

August 1844 had seen the delivery of Sarah Rachel, who was baptized in November. The day James Nathaniel was born was June 24, 1846. Sadly, he passed away from chest inflammation a few months before his third birthday.
